BIOGRAPHY

Ron Athey has been working at the vanguard of performance art for 25 years. Self-taught, his work developed out of post-punk/pre-goth scenes and begins with Premature Ejaculation (PE), an early 1980s collaboration with Rozz Williams. Their approach to performance art was informed by the club actions of Johanna Went and the formulation of Industrial Culture, the idea of psycho/neuro acoustics in sound performance. In the 1990s, Athey formed a company of performers and made Torture Trilogy, a series of works that addressed the AIDS pandemic directly through memorializing and philosophical reflection. 

This work is characterized by the physical intensity of 1970s body-art canon, such as COUM Transmission, Carolee Schneeman and the Viennese Actionists, which toured internationally. The trilogy’s final chapter, Deliverance, was commissioned and premiered at the ICA London. In the 2000s, Athey developed genre-stretching theatrical works like Joyce and The Judas Cradle, and a series of major solo performances such as The Solar Anus, Sebastiane, Self-Obliteration Solo and Incorruptible Flesh, a series of solo performances that reflect Athey’s collaborations with the late Lawrence Steger. 

Gifts of the Spirit: Prophecy, Automatism and Discernment is Athey’s vision for an automatic writing machine brought to life in collaboration with composer and opera director Sean Griffin. Athey has been writing Gifts of the Spirit since 1980 when he moved away from the Pentecostal and Spiritualist practices in which he was raised. These writings describe his experience of growing up as a “living saint” within an environment of abuse, vibrating with the energy of the otherworldly and doing so without faith. 

Currently Athey is presenting Acephalous Monster, is a performance with projections, readings, lectures, appropriated text and sound. Largely inspired by the secret society of Acéphale, Andre Masson’s design of a mascot, and drawing parallels between pre-Occupation 30s Paris with pre-Operation Spanner UK, the work is an attempt to make sense of a current reality where neo-fascism is mutating, creeping, and marching.

PROGRAMMING/CURATION

2001-2002, July: Athey and Vaginal Davis have co-curated Platinum Oasis, an installation/ac- tionist event as part of OUTFEST Los Angeles. The durational site-specific work took place in July of 2001 and 2002.

2003: The Fierce Festival presented “Visions of Excess” in Birmingham, U.K. The events fea- tured an international lineup of artists, filmmakers, actors, and musicians including Kembra Pfahler (US), Bruce La Bruce (Canada), Udo Kier (Germany), Franko B. (UK), Kira O’Reilly (UK), Osseus Labyrint (US), Davide Grassi (Slovenia), Ann Magnuson (US), Velvet Hammer Burlesque (US), Lydia Lunch (US), Slava Mogutin (Russia).

2004 “Visions of Excess” with same lineup plus Slovenian artists was presented in Ljubljana as a coproduction with Aksioma.

2007, 2009 The event continued as “Re/Visions of Excess,” co-curated with Lee Adams in Birmingham (June 2007) , and in London as part of the Spill Festival (Easter weekend 2009). And finally Copenhagen at Warehouse 9 (2009).

2009: Athey and Julie Tolentino curated a series of showcases that featured Julie’s live archive, “The Sky Remains the Same,” and invited guest artists: At Remy’s on Temple in historic Filipino-town, Los Angeles, Juliana Snapper and Franko B., at UC Riverside we invited Zackary Drucker and Cassils.

2014: London’s Horse Hospital venue, Athey started curated a series of 4 artists in performance/ light sculpture/sound based arts called “Xenolalia.”

WRITING AND JOURNALISM

Pleading in the Blood: The Art and Life of Ron Athey was published by Intellect Press, Bristol, UK, in 2013; edited by Dominic Johnson, monograph. This included essays and photos, and some of Athey’s writings from “Gifts of the Spirit,” a collection of short stories and recollections based on his training to be a Pentecostal minister, and the accompanying perversions.

Athey’s writings have been anthologized in Strategic Sex, editor D. Travers Scott, Haworth Press; Unnatural Disasters: Recent Writings from the Golden State, editor Nicole Panter, published by Incommunicado Press; Out of Character, editor Mark Russell; Acting on AIDS, editors Oppenheimer and Reckitt, Serpent's Tail; LIVE Culture, “Reading Sister Aimee,” Tate Modern publications.

Opening at Participant Inc. in NYC in September 2020, end of year at MOCA Tucson, 2021 at ICA-LA. This will include a program of video screenings and live performances, plus related exhibitions at adjacent spaces.
