Automatism: I’ve been working with Paul Donald on these Spiritualist planchettes, 5 models in editions of 5 each:

Carbon, Viscera, Chinese Checkers (colored indentations are my “grip”), Stain 16, and Stoneseed. All are equipped with casters, wood screw on grip for standard pencil size, editions/authenticity metal tag on the underside, these are proper Neo-Victorian!

I usually scry into a state of hypnosis (using a hypnotic induction from the internet) focusing on candle burning against a black mirror. See Georgiana Houghton’s art from the 19th century for some of the most articulated uses of a planchette in Spiritualist drawing.

I developed these for use in 2010’s Gifts of the Spirit Automatic Writing installation, which has been seen in London, Manchester, Birmingham, NYC and as a component in an opera at the Cathedral of St. Vibiana in 2019.
